Sing Low, Sweet Bass Vocals

Probably the most famous bass voices in popular music are associated with R&B - you've got Isaac Hayes, for example (here with the epic awesome of the Shaft theme song - and scope Jesse Jackson with the intro!).

And you've got Barry White (Your Sweetness is My Everything)

 But probably the most common place to find the bass vocals is spirituals - though, it's less popular with the radio crowd. This is Paul Robeson singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot (you knew it was coming, right?).

This one is Aaronn McCune of Gold City singing Turn Your Back. He hits some really awesome notes with great resonance.

Country has a fair number of great bass artists, including Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys (here set to still pics for their song Elvira).

And of course, the incomparable Johnny Cash.

But... let's not discount other genres. I mean, I've known forever that other guys can, in fact, sing the low notes. My dad has a bass singing voice and used to wake me up in the mornings by mutilating singing opera. Plus, there's the whole Rick Astley thing. But I'm not sure he's technically bass - I think he's more baritone. Kinda like Chris Band of The Calling - low baritone, maybe bass.

Then there are some true bass guys. And it's always a surprise to see these skinny guys belt out the bass notes. I cut my teeth on Bowzer of Sha na na (Dude. I loved that show.).
